A true Cornish Gem
May 2010 saw the opening of the re-named and re-designed Kernow Course. The first course built by Herman and Martin Bond the original owners of St Mellion, designed by J. Hamilton Stutt opened in 1976.
The Old Course, as it was then, called opened and quickly became a must play course and by 1979 was included amongst the elite by its inclusion on the European Tour with the hosting of the Benson & Hedges International Open. This was followed by two further tournaments as it played host to the Tournament Players Championship, which included a win for Bernhard Langer in 1983.
Once the Nicklaus Signature Course opened at St Mellion the Old Course came out of the spotlight but remained popular with members and visitors alike, however all that has now changed. In 2008 work began on the £20-million re-development of St Mellion, an integral part of this was the enhancement of the original course to improve existing holes add this to the construction of 9 new holes to offer a really exciting new course.
The new layout starts with the longest par-5 on the course, as this is a hole created from the original 1st and 2nd holes of the Old Course. Holes 2 to 5 were part of the original design but have now been enhanced by strategic new bunkers. Holes 6 to 9 are new additions to the re-designed course that offers the opportunity to use every club in your bag!
The back 9 starts with another 3 new holes with a real risk, reward par- 4 10th hole, which is reachable with a Sunday best but danger lurks so caution should prevail. The new 11th & 12th holes overlook the Nicklaus Course and surrounding area, which will hopefully give some inspiration playing these holes, which are definite birdie opportunities.
Holes 13 to 16 are a part of the original design but have been tweaked to bring to the standard of the new holes. The new 17th hole is an exciting new par-4, which has two plateaus to aim for to provide a flat lie for the demanding but exciting 2nd shot. The closing hole now returns back to the clubhouse with the new tee strategically placed to ensure the golfer is tested to the very end, but hopefully a par will be achieved so the 19th hole completes an enjoyable round of golf.
