Originally designed and set out by J Hamilton Stutt in 1976, it soon became recognised as one of the finest courses in the South West, playing host to the Benson & Hedges International Open in 1979, followed by the Tournament Players Championship and the Weetabix Ladies British Open.
With the arrival of the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course in 1988, the Kernow course was somewhat overshadowed, until in 2008 it was completely redeveloped, incorporating 9 of the original holes, extended and modernised, along with nine exciting new holes. With wider fairways, larger greens and spectacular views the Kernow course is a wonderful complement to the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course.
The new layout starts with the longest Par 4 on the course, as this is a hole created from the original 1st and 2nd holes of the Old Course. This is a truly memorable Par 4 that could grace the Nicklaus Signature Course. Holes 2 to 5 were part of the original design but have now been enhanced by strategic new bunkers to catch that errant shot. Holes 6 to 9 are new additions to the re-designed course that offer the opportunity to use every club in your bag! The 6th requires accuracy both of the tee and with the 2nd shot . The 7th is a stunning 200yard Par 3 followed by a 541 yard Par 5 8th hole which plays everyone of it’s yards. The 9th is similar to the 6th that it requires great accuracy and a pretty hole to boot!
The back 9 starts with another 3 new holes with a real risk, reward par 4 10th hole, which is reachable with a Sunday best but danger lurks so caution should prevail. The new 11th & 12th holes overlooks the Nicklaus Course and surrounding area which will hopefully give some inspiration playing these holes which are definite birdie opportunities. As with the front 9 holes 13 to 16 are apart of the original design but have been tweaked to bring to the standard of the new holes. The current 17th will be replaced in early Spring with an exciting new Par 4 which has two plateau’s to aim for to provide a flat lie for the demanding but exciting 2nd shot. The closing hole now returns back to the clubhouse with the new tee strategically placed to ensure the golfer is tested to the very end but hopefully a par will be achieved so the 19th hole completes an enjoyable round of golf.
