My Holidays by Emily Smith
Aged 8¼
Monday
Today we went on our holidays to Cornwall and my mummy buyed me a new game for my Nintendo DS called super Mario which is really amazing. I play it with my brother Johnny. He has a DS too and we played Super Mario together. We only got to the mines when we arrived at St Mellion. St Mellion is a hotel in Cornwall and it’s really big. It has three swimming pools and a play room with a nice lady called Elaine. She is like a teacher, but really really kind. We have our own room next to my mummy’s and daddy’s room, which is really cool. It has a big TV so we can watch what we want. We also have a secret door to mummy and daddy’s room, which has two doors. We had some drinks in our room, then we went to the restaurant. There are two restaurants. The one we went to was really good. It has colouring pencils and paper and markers from drawing pictures. I am really good at drawing. For my dinner I ate spaghetti bolognaise, which is my favourite and my brother ate sausages which he really really likes.
Tuesday
Today I was so excited to go swimming this morning. Mummy said it was too early. Grown ups always want to stay in bed so long, it’s not fair. We went to the restaurant for breakfast. We had coco pops and daddy had sausages and eggs and tomatoes. My mummy says it will make him fat. My mummy has some fruit in a bowl and some yoghurt. I really like yoghurt but it doesn’t taste nice with Coco Pops. Then we wanted to go swimming, but you can’t go swimming after breakfast because it will make you sick. After we waited ages I went to get changed with mummy and Johnny went with daddy. The changing rooms have lots of hair dryers, because ladies have long hair. After that we went swimming. There are three swimming pools, which is really good. There is a small pool for babies. In the hexagonal shape pool there are fountains and they have lots of floats and noodles, and things that you have to get from the bottom of the pool. I can pick them up with my feet as well as my hands. In the long pool there are mostly grown ups and there is also a bubble pool, but we didn’t go in that. After swimming we got dressed and we went to a giant maze which is near the hotel. It is called the Maize Maze It is in the shape of a dinosaur. It took us a long time to get to the middle because we kept getting lost. There is a competition to catch clowns. You have to answer lots of questions and they give you letters to make up a secret word. Then we went to get ice cream and played in the park. There are climbing frames, a climbing wall, swings and slides. After the maze we went back to the hotel and we had dinner. There is a lady in the restaurant called Dora. She is really nice and she gave us lemonade with our dinner. After dinner she came to our room to look after Johnny and me because Mummy and Daddy went to the grown ups restaurant. It’s called An Boesti, which is Cornish. Did you know Cornish is a different language? Dora brought some games to play and which was very nice.
Wednesday
Today it was raining. We got dressed and then we had our breakfast. Then we went to a place called Plymouth, which is very close to our hotel. It has an Aquarium. An Aquarium has lots and lots of fish and sea creatures. The Aquarium we went to is the biggest in Great Britain and it has 4000 fish. My favourite fish is a clown fish, which is like Nemo’s dad Marlin. I used to have a clown fish in my fish tank, which I got for my 6th birthday, but it died and now I have some Rosie Barbs. They have loads of Clown fish at the Aquarium and Rosie Barbs. My brother really liked the sharks and stingray. Did you know a stingray is a type of shark, even though it doesn’t look like a shark. At the Aquarium they have fish on the floor and when you step on the ground the swim away from your feet, but they are not real fish. After we had seen the fish we went to a room where you could make things. I made a Clown fish mask. I cut out some card to look like a fish and I cut some holes for the eyes, Then I used glue to stick to stick on some orange tissue paper and then I glued on some cotton wool. Mummy helped me with the stripes because I am a bit wobbly. Daddy made an Octopus mask with Johnny. After we had finished making our masks, it was sunny. We went to the harbour and had fish and chips for our tea. We didn’t have lunch today because we got up late and had a big breakfast because it was like lunch and breakfast together. Daddy was so silly because he threw chips in the air and the seagulls kept catching them! Then we went back to the hotel and we got a DVD to watch in our room.
Thursday
Today we had pancakes for our breakfast and mummy had muesli and yoghurt. I had maple syrup on my pancakes, like Daddy which is really yummy. Johnny had jam on his, because jam is his favourite. Then we went off to clubs - I went to crafty fun and Johnny went to football school. In crafty fun I met Charlotte, Charlotte is really good at crafts and we made beaded bracelets for our mums – I made a green one, because pink is my favourite colour and Charlotte made a pink one. We also played some games with Elaine who was the teacher. She was really nice and very funny. After kids club we had lunch in the Brasserie. There was a special buffet only for children, which was really nice. I sat with my friend Charlotte. In the morning when we were at school mummy had here nails done really prettily in the spa and after lunch she helped me to do my nails. She also had lots of creams put on her face, but that is only for grown ups. Johnny and Dad went with a man called Jack to have a golf lesson. Johnny said Jack was really cool and can do lots of cool tricks. Johnny also had a go in a golf buggy, which I really want to do.
Friday
Today we went cycling on the hotel’s bicycles. My one had gears on it which is easier to go up hills. I asked dad if I can have one for my birthday. We cycled down to the big river. It is called the river Tamar and it is amazing. Dad says we need our passports to go across it, but Mum says he’s lying. We saw lots of things on our bike ride. Lady birds, a grass snake, which is a bit like a big worm, but yellow and black very wriggly. Dad found it under a stone. We saw some deer on the edge of the wood and also some fox poo, but we didn’t see the fox. Near the river there was this big house, with big gardens, which you can visit. It is called Cothele and we had some tickets for it from the hotel. My favourite thing about Cothele was the café. We had some scones (the ones without flies) and jam and cream. I had lemonade, but mum and dad had tea. The cream looked a bit like ice cream and Dad had loads on his scones. After our bike ride we played tennis at the hotel. It was great fun but really tiring after our bike ride. We had dinner in our bedroom which was like a having a picnic but not outside and a man brought it to our door. I had a huge hamburger with chips and tomato ketchup.
Saturday
Today we went to the Eden Project. We learnt about the Eden Project at School for our science project. It is a giant hole in the ground and has these amazing enormous bubble buildings and you can see it from space. Inside the bubbles were loads of plants and flowers and huge trees and you can walk along the top of the really tall trees which is really amazing. There are giant machines which make lots of noise and they have handles that you have to spin around. They squash nuts into small pieces, but you are not allowed to eat them, because they are inside a glass box. Mummy and me had a competition with Daddy and Johnny to see who could do it fastest and we won. Daddy says it’s because he and Johnny are gentlemen and they let us win, but Mummy said he is just a bad loser. When we got back to the hotel it was really late and we were really really hungry so we had to have big pasties for dinner. I drew a picture of the Eden project for Elaine while mummy and daddy were chatting. Then as a treat because we were so good we had chocolate brownie for pudding.
Sunday
Today was really sad because we had to go home and there were so many things we didn’t get time to do. Mummy said that we could come again soon which will be awesome. Before we went home, we went to a place called Looe. Johnny thought was so funny as he kept saying we were going to the toilet! We watched people fishing and we went crab fishing with daddy. You have a small net bag and you put bacon in the bag, because crabs like bacon and then you tie a piece of string to the bag and put it in the water and then the crab tries to eat the bacon. We caught lots of big crabs and put them in our bucket, but we let them go again before we left. Dad says some people eat them but they didn’t look very nice to eat. We also bought a present of sweets in a box for nanny and grandad, because they looked after our cats Branston and Fin. When we got home I was really happy because Mummy and Daddy gave us both a surprise St Mellion bear. It has a blue Jumper and is really cute. I can’t wait to go back it was really really nice and I met lots of nice people and did lots of really nice things. Mummy says next time we go we can go canoeing and to the zoo and horse riding, which I am really excited about.
